Horror to pass a stormy night. Mar 03, Jonathan rated it really liked it Shelves: dark-urban-fantasy-horror-and-weird. Night Vale without the humor I know how that sounds, saying that it is like Welcome to Night Vale without the humor. And if it was set in the Midwest instead of a desert area of the southwest. But it works really well.

The only reason this is a 4-star book instead of a 5-star book is the fact that it feels like there should have been more stories. Jun 25, harlsmits rated it it was amazing Shelves: horror. The stories are unique, even the darkest tales are peppered with humor a diner that only serves eggs, waffles, and decaf; killer snowflakes. Jul 31, C Patrick Daily rated it really liked it. Fun, creepy, weird, like an Adult Gravity Falls. I liked the novel better, but there are some gems in this collection of short stories from the town you'll never leave.

Sep 15, Kitty rated it it was ok Shelves: stars , boring , horror , read-in Read : September 15, Rating : 2,5 Stars It wasn't terrible but it was kinda I was expecting more from this and it didn't deliver sadly. Feb 06, Victoria Fuller rated it it was amazing Shelves: ebook , own-it , want-to-own. Great collection of ahort stories. A much darker view of this sleepy little town. I love these books and would love to visit, without the not being able to leave part. Mar 06, shannon Stubbs rated it really liked it.

Ok I guess you don't have to like everything written by the author. I loved Anomaly Flats but not so much these short stories. I liked the dark funny world of Anomaly flats but this book had some really scary stories. I did enjoy Aberration. Sep 11, Steven Luna rated it it was amazing. In the most venerable tradition of such horror masters as H. What exactly does Farmer Buchheit do on that terrible farm?

What chilling events lie ahead for the people of Anomaly Flats…and what terrible occurrences lie behind them? For this set, Smith largely forgoes his trademark humor in favor of walking a sincere horror path and ends up elevating and refining the form entirely with his careful attention to detail, his keen ability to spin story magic out of shadow, and his deft skill at drawing his readers happily into his horrifying world with our spines tingling and leaving us dead-center with our jaws agape, hoping for more of his fabulous madness around every corner.

Aug 03, PJ Lea rated it really liked it Shelves: fantasy , sci-fi. Anomaly Flats is a strange little town with residents who may be even stranger. This was a great way to discover more about the town and the events that go on there. I loved the original book and this one is just as good, with its tales of weirdness, intrigue and trans dimensional oddities.

There is humour in some of the tales but others are just plain spooky. It was easy to read, flowed well and each story had me guessing how it would end. Aug 01, Stephanie rated it liked it. While not all the stories in this collection kept my interest, a good portion of them did, so it was definitely worth the read! You should pick it up, too! Oct 10, Jessica George rated it it was amazing. Great sequel-twisted short stories I loved the first Anomaly Flats, so the sequel of short stories looked like fun This author is hilarious at dark humor and I plan on reading all his books.

Nov 02, Jack Allen rated it it was ok. I am not a fan of this sequel, prequel whatever it is. Pages Beranda. Far from being predictable, formulaic, or full of cliches, Clayton Smith has written a very imaginative tale that draws the reader into the very strange place that is Anomaly Flats.

I enjoyed the many twists and turns that were woven into the plot as well as the humor, which never felt forced or contrived. Well worth a read. Recommende 4. Nov 02, H rated it liked it Shelves: own. My first time reading 'speculative fiction' though it was more sci Fi. This book is like an episode of Doctor Who, but even weirder. It's pretty well written and quite funny. Mallory was the worst character I've ever come across in my life. Annoying, sarcastic beyond belief, selfish. Just couldn't stand her.

I loved Lewis. All in all I enjoyed it despite myself but it's not something I'd pick up again. Nov 20, Adela Durkee rated it it was amazing Shelves: author-s-i-ve-met. My favorite book of Perhaps my one of my top I'm not quite sure what speculative fiction is, but this book filled me with joy. It's a bit scary, sorta like Steven King, with a tongue-in-cheek humor like Erma Bombeck.

A smooth read, perhaps like a fine scotch. I don't really know that much about scotch, but I hear a good one can't be beat. I plan to buy several more copies as gifts. Sep 16, Ben rated it liked it. Tough outsider with shady past wanders into a small town where everything is not quite what it seems - and finds it difficult to leave. How many books, movies, TV shows have been created with this premise? I can think of 20 off the top of my head.

Anomaly Flats may be derivative, and some of the writing and character interaction is clunky, but it's not the worst of its genre. I may read the follow-up. May 27, Joey rated it it was ok. A more blatant ripoff of Welcome to Night Vale cannot be envisioned.

The wacky announcements, the town hidden from the rest of the country, the excitable outsider scientist I never review a book without finishing it but I could not get through how spectacularly derivative it was. I read that the author was inspired by WTNV.

His inspiration should have led him much farther afield. Two stars instead of one because the writing is decent. Sep 14, Megan Lister rated it liked it. I'm not sure how to rate this. It seems like it wants to be "Welcome to Night Vale" but doesn't quite make it. It felt at times that random stuff was just thrown in for the sake of being quirky. I also knew what was in the backpack from the very beginning. But it does have some good parts, and the ending was perfect.

So, a solid three stars. Sep 17, Sherry Ledbetter rated it it was amazing. Very imaginative! Very good read. You know things like this a not real but you can't put this book down. There are so many strange things that start happening, you don't know where it will lead you on this strange journey. Very good Mr. Smith, I enjoyed you adventure through Anomaly Flats.

Jul 04, Becky rated it did not like it Shelves: kindle. Too many detailed events came from Night Vale. There are no likable characters. The writer uses sarcasm and wit to grace over interactions where he could have added more insight into the story, characters, and situations.

The story tries too hard to be funny and shocking but doesn't quite pull it off in my opinion. Nov 03, Eirik Gumeny rated it really liked it.

Reminded me a lot of the TV show Eureka, especially in that it was a little repetitive and nobody ever gave anyone a straight answer. Really well written though. Mar 10, Charlee rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , sci-fi , kindle-book. It's creepy and it's kooky, mysterious and spooky, it's altogether ooky, Anomaly Flats!

So that doesn't quite work but I'm not sure how else to describe this book. It's been sitting in my Kindle app for some time just waiting to be read and the time finally came. All I can say is, wow! Anomaly Flats is an odd little place and so is this book. That's not a bad thing though! I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this tale of a crazy little town that could be its own Twilight Zone movie, but weir It's creepy and it's kooky, mysterious and spooky, it's altogether ooky, Anomaly Flats!

I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this tale of a crazy little town that could be its own Twilight Zone movie, but weirder. It's everything quirky, odd, strange, scary, bizarre I do admit I wasn't a fan of our main protagonist, Mallory, but I'm not sure if you were supposed to be. Or maybe you were. I don't know. I haven't figured that part out yet. Let's be honest, I haven't figured any of it out and I love that!

But she was quite the buzzkill. Lewis, though! I loved Lewis! I also loved all the oddities of this super weird little town that I lost myself in.

Part of me wants to visit there myself and a larger, more intellectual part absolutely does not. It's a story that I could read again and again and always find something I missed.

I can't wait to do just that. Oct 06, Kathleen rated it liked it. Quirky, but not exactly likeable This setup like a charmingly quirky story. Great premise, and some fabulous and funny creative twists and ideas. Unfortunately, Mallory strays too far into just plain bitchy and self-centered.

She has no redeeming qualities. Still, I managed to struggle to the end of this novel, only to be rewarded by everything unraveling at the end, nothing good hap Quirky, but not exactly likeable This setup like a charmingly quirky story. Still, I managed to struggle to the end of this novel, only to be rewarded by everything unraveling at the end, nothing good happens, no closure, no ending What happened to the days when a story ended with a book? It feels like digital books are just a method for the author to sell multiple pieces.

Oct 03, Glenn Neiman rated it it was ok. Okay, so I finished the book, which suggests it was not terrible. Indeed, the writing was easy to read. The problem is that I do not know what this was intended to be. The book is silly, and not in a good way. Though, if it was intended to be humorous, it missed on that level as well. So, too silly to be serious, and not funny enough to be comedy. It reminded me of "The Hike" by Drew Magary. So, if you liked that book, I'd suspect you'll like this one and vice versa.

Both were silly and nonsen Okay, so I finished the book, which suggests it was not terrible. Both were silly and nonsensical, yet not really funny.

Personally, I would skip them both, but depends what you like. Jan 11, Pilke Valta rated it it was amazing. This book is new weird in the best way possible.

It hits the nail on the head for me, personally, in what I want to see in my speculative scifi horror comedies about smalltown America. Nov 13, David Flinn rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites. This is one of those novels that are basically about nothing at all until about the halfway point.

Or at least that's how it seemed to me. This is, however, the only novel that starts off that way but I couldn't stop reading it, and when the story actually did have a point in the form of an actual goal it only made me read it a hell of a lot faster.

What I loved about this novel is that it was absolutely absurd and bizarre without going for over-the-top or shock-value in a way that didn't fit This is one of those novels that are basically about nothing at all until about the halfway point. What I loved about this novel is that it was absolutely absurd and bizarre without going for over-the-top or shock-value in a way that didn't fit right into the story from the beginning.

I've stopped reading so many novels for that very reason. I've been meaning to read this novel for quite some time now, really glad I finally did.
